Nursing Homes
A nursing home (also called a skilled nursing facility) is a senior care option designed for older adults who need 24/7 medical care and supervision, usually because of chronic illness, disability, or recovery after hospitalization.
Here’s what sets nursing homes apart:
- Medical Care: Unlike assisted living, nursing homes have licensed nurses on duty around the clock. They provide skilled care such as wound treatment, IV therapy, injections, monitoring of vital signs, and coordination with doctors.
- Daily Living Assistance: Residents get full support with activities of daily living (ADLs)—bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, mobility, etc.
- Rehabilitation Services: Many nursing homes include physical, occupational, and speech therapy, often for people recovering from surgery, strokes, or serious injuries.
- Living Setup: Rooms may be private or shared. They feel more clinical than assisted living—closer to a hospital environment, though some facilities aim for a homier feel.
- Who It’s For: Seniors who need significant medical attention, have complex health conditions, or cannot safely live in assisted living. Families also turn to nursing homes when care needs exceed what can be provided at home.
